The gist: TL;DR
To reduce spreadsheet fatigue issues in British Telecom, I designed the Asset Resilience Tracker, which takes scattered compliance information and converts it into one place where the information is presented in an easy-to-understand manner via an actionable health check. The system has also moved Governance Leads away from manual reporting and into a proactive system whereby they are able to manage issues through a drill-down tool linkages that provide a direct link from high-level information to actions.
The challenge: Breaking Spreadsheet Fatigue
To keep assets resilient, this is even more important within the British Telecom (BT Group). The former approach where Governance Leads manually used spreadsheets to monitor application health, with many applications being hundred, was error-sensitive, consuming a lot of time, and lacked transparency. The objective was to get from manually reporting to solving problems automatically, with a Single Source of Truth to be shared with the CEO.
My Role
The challenge assigned to me entailed the automation of spreadsheets into the ‘Bird’s Eye’ dashboard, designing a progressive drill-down experience for the complex data of compliance, and creating a seamless process for the Governance Leads to act upon insights instantly.

Feature 1: Strategic Analytics
The Resilience Governance Leads were also required to shift focus from a real-time view of their resilience efforts to address the pressing issue of relevance: Are our resilience efforts finally yielding results? I created the Analytics Dashboard for viewing long-term trends, giving authorities the ability to analyse systemic vulnerabilities, forecast dangers in the future, and make informed allocations based on evidence rather than mere guesswork.
Forecasting Risk
Rather than waiting for a crisis to occur, long-term trend lines expose failure patterns that repeat over months. This allows leadership to move away from playing defense and into making proactive, predictive resource allocation moves before a critical compliance threshold is ever breached.
Benchmarking Performance
We can now compare performance across different business units, immediately isolating "hotspots" of non-compliance. This allows the Ex-Co to prove the value of resilience efforts and precisely target interventions where they will have the biggest impact.
Feature 2: The bird's eye view
Designing for decision makers, the existing workflow took hours to compile the data. I designed the business area screen based on the Card UI design pattern consisting of Delivery Units Level 1. It takes seconds for the Leads to determine health.
Clarity over Clutter
The Resilience Score jumps right out, as it can measure the strength of an entire unit in seconds. The Completion Score does the same thing.
A Simple Question Answered
Dynamic Deltas (Green/Red Arrows) give the Lead fast feedback on what they want to know: Are we winning or losing ground this month?
Shifting the Mindset
Due in 30 Days is a significant push towards adopting the habit. It helps in physically, behavior-wise, changing from firefighting to issue avoidance, and bringing control back to them.

Feature 3: Taming Data Density
Drill down & smart filtering when a lead discovers a trouble unit, they must locate the needle in a haystack among more than 50 applications. I developed a heavy yet easy-to-scan table view combined with a side panel filtering solution.
Progressive Disclosure
The user can drill down directly from the general card to the apps list, analyse and identify the problems.
Contextual Filtering
The side bar has options to filter datas based on Tier, Lifecycle, and Resilience Status. The pill feature helps to display the counts/currently applied filters.
Feature 4: Closing the loop
From insight to action, the dashboard not only highlights issues, but also provides a solution to these issues. The application’s detail view splits the 6 key metrics of resilience.
Root Cause Analysis
Users are able to drill down into individual metrics to identify what questions/answers are responsible for the failure.
CITS Integration
The ‘Create Task’ button links directly to BT’s Control Issue Task System so that the assignment of remediation tasks can be accomplished immediately from within the leads software.
Final Results & Strategic Impact
The Asset Resilience Tracker didn't just save person-hours; it fundamentally elevated the Governance Lead's job, making it more strategic, focused, and much less stressful.
